The 19-year-old author is making waves with her debut novel, and for good reasons.
Its been aminutesince I picked up a book for my own enjoyment.
And its been nearly a decade since I last picked up a Y.A.

This is not because the genre is childish or that adults shouldnt be reading Y.A.
fiction or that Y.A.
fiction isnt real literature.

Louisa Wells
But rather, because the last time I checked, the genre was very … white.
Of all the Y.A.
And even fewer books, if any, were written by authors who were actually young adultsthemselves.
Which is what makes Camryn Garrett and her debut novel,Full Disclosure, so fascinating.
Specifically, black men, but also black women.
And I dont think thats like a well-known thing, Garrett told EW.
Its even rarer to find such a story that solely focuses on a black kid.
Or the recent example of rapper T.I.
And much of that is inspired by Garretts own experiences.
When I was in high school, I had all these conversations with my friends about sex.
For various reasons, Garrett added.
Like I didnt want to talk to my mom because I thought it was weird.
In fact, the novel opens with Simones dad accompanying her to the gynecologist.
But I dont think thats necessarily true.
So, I wanted to show a different side to combat that.
And I think that parents should just attempt to keep open communication.
Theres plenty more that Garrett accomplishes with her debut and she puts captivating spins on classic Y.A.
And she manages to write a hell of a novel while doing it.
