EW’s TV critics react to the 2020 Emmy nominations.

The Mandalorian… Whaaaa?

And yet, he was passed over.

Better Call Saul

Greg Lewis/AMC

At least the show itself earned seven nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.

(Thank you for the chicken!

)Successionand NetflixsOzarktied for the most nominations for a drama series, with 18 each.

And heres where things get weird: The second most-nominated drama, Darren, was…The Mandalorian.

If it were a videogame, it would be almost as good asShadows of the Empire.

And now it is the flagship member of a uniquely dispiriting Outstanding Drama Series lineup.

ButThe MandalorianandStranger Thingsare both so obviously comfort food, cutesy retreats into 40-year-old pop flotsam.

Take famously adorable Yoda and make him a baby!)

The comedy categories gave serious recognition toRamy Youssef’sRamyandIssa Rae’sInsecure.

They’re both bright, young multi-hyphenates making uniquely personal sitcoms that are stylishandlaugh-out-loud funny.

I’m so happyBetty Gilpinscored another supporting nomination for her towering work onGLOW.

If you havent watched, just fire up the first episode, titled Angela Bassett is the Baddest Bitch.

Also in need of a support group?

Once again, Darren, the Variety Talk Series nominees are the same names weve seen for several years.

Fam, thats harsh.

and pleasantly surprised to seeJeremy Irons' adventurous clowning receive a Lead Actor nomination.

and a writing nomination for creator Damon Lindelof’s and Cord Jefferson’s superhero-myth-rewriting “This Extraordinary Being.”

How can I put this, Kristen?
