Im a great person or Im a great actor.
Ive never felt that way.
But then, as soon as someone says something negative, its like, I knew it!
You know what I mean?
Its just a horrible feedback loop and thats why I dont watch myself.
Its better to just do the work.
Comedy just always felt more fun to me because in some ways it felt more honest.
You cant force people to laugh.
If somethings funny, its inevitably truthful.
No one can laugh at something thats disingenuous.
Its more fun for me to play comedy.
Most really funny people I know came from really difficult circumstances.
Its also a fake way to tell the truth.
All the stuff I do with [director] Sean Baker in all of his movies is all improv.
They know how to attack the joke from every angle without exhausting it.
I just really feel like I learned some new skills from him and thats exciting.
That part was really fun for me.
Also at the same time, I met him 10 years ago.
We were auditioning at the same time for that Michael Mann moviePublic Enemies.
We both acknowledged each other, but then when we met up [forIt] we remembered each other.
Post-Minor Threat it was Fugazi.
It was weird noise-art-rock jot down of stuff.
I think that helped define my ethos a little bit.
But then what I liked in movies and TV as a kid was really absurd stuff.Mr.
Showwas my favorite show when I was in high school, 11th grade.Mr.
That was the first time I felt like I had made it as a celebrity.

I dont necessarily know if that informs anything that has to do with Eddie whatsoever.
And intimacy is defined by truth and never by sexuality, ever.
At a certain point, women go through menopause and I cant get it up anymore.
It all ends in friendship in one way or another.
When I read that part in the book, it hit me in my stomach.
I can relate to that because I am also terrified of not having this thing.
Thats where it locked in for me and made it very real.
Theyre getting involved at the finish line.
… With film, all of the pieces are equally important.
I can do all of that as a 40-year-old man, but he was like 12 or 13.
I saw behind-the-scenes footage of him improv-ing, it was so crazy.
I couldnt have done that when I was 12, thats crazy to me.
Im just doing my best to keep up with a 12- or 13-year-olds performance.
That skill is not a teachable skill, its crazy what his speed and ability is.
You auditioned for a role in the firstItmovie.Yes, I did.
Im not gonna say what it is.
If Andy Muschietti will tell you, then it’s possible for you to print it.
Actors do this really weird thing where theyre competitive with one another.
I think they should celebrate one another, even wins they feel should be theirs.
Its not interesting to have one person talking in a room.
We need each other to be good.
Was this situation an instance where Andy kept you in mind forChapter Two?No, man.
I dont think so.
I just think I got stupid lucky that they ended up casting Eddie with Jack.
I think it was like, Whoa, I really look like him.
I think it was just very easy to do that.
Thats where I go, thats just right place, right time.
Total blind stupid coincidence that has nothing to do with how incredible of a thespian I am.
It Chapter Twois now playing in theaters.
