(Still looking good after the season finale, even if I was wrong about finding a landing strip.

)The Evil Aaron Hypothesis.

(Looking shaky, though some elements remain viable.

)The Human Extinction Argument.

Not just about the second season, but about all ofLost.

Consider this, then, my One Ring to Rule Them All concept ofLost.

I call it theAll You Need Is Love (and Desmond) Theory ofLost.

Maybe… as corny as Desmond proclaiming, And I will win this race for love!?

Maybe… as corny as Desmond announcing, I have to get my honor back!?

Call it corny, but Im nutty for the idea.

And I think Im right.

), or Jin and Sun (even though their relationship isLosts main source of human grounding).

In my view, Desmond/Penelope has suddenly become the defining narrative thread ofLost.

Everything else is a subplot within that larger context.

Maybe hell remain a marginal figure in terms of total screen time.

ButLostcan be all about Desmond and Penelope even if it isnt literally all about Desmond and Penelope.

But my understanding is that the novel is a mosaic of characters and incidents, much likeLost.

Thats a great description of how I view Desmond: Hes the absent center ofLost.

(At least, absent until now.)

By the way: I am told that the Big Twist inOur Mutual Friend SPOILER ALERT!

Tests of character, subversive surveillance, false identities thatsLost, too, isnt it?

His booksThe Human ZooandManwatchingcould be Dharma source texts.

And then theres Desmonds last name Hume.

Did you all catch it on the envelopes of all the letters he had written to Penelope?

You know, the essentialLostthemes.]

Lest Ive crashed your brain with potentially wrong-headed references, Id like to suggest one more possibleLostlink.

Its the main reason for the title of this theory.

In the infamous final episode ofThe Prisoner, Number Six has his own character-defining, key-turning moment.

But again: an essay for another time.

And I think the series will be better for it.

Through Desmond and Penelope, Jack and company now have reason to hope.

Even thoughLostis on summer holiday, Doc Jensen is not.

(You X-Men fanboys know EXACTLY what Im talking about.)

Until then: TALK BACK!
