However, this time it wasafterRick had already stabbed him to death and he had reincarnated as a zombie.

JON BERNTHAL: You know, man, it was crazy.
I didnt even realize that I was playing a zombie until I was playing it.
And everybody kind of got their own little say in what that last scene actually was.
But then at the very end I realized, now you gotta go play a zombie!
I never even thought about that.
And Im like, I dont know how to do this!
What do you do?
So you didnt get to practice your zombie walk in advance or anything?
But he didnt go for it.
Take me inside the filming of that final confrontation and the emotions at play while playing it.
We shot that scene all night long.
And like I said, there was a lot of feeling about the last scene.
Lets do this for you and me.
In terms of Shanes mental state at that point, what were you trying to get across?
He knows how much of a danger he is.
I think theres a suicidal flavor.
Come on and step up, raise your gun.
Did Rick make the right move?
Would you have killed you?
And I think that no matter what, somebody was going to die that night.
I do think he did the right thing.
NEXT PAGE: Did Bernthal ask to be written off the show after Darabont was fired?
So naturally that begs the question: Did you ask to be written out of the show?
You know, no.
This was always the plan.
This was always the plan that this was going to do down this way.
The fact that now I get to go work with him again [on TNTs upcomingL.A.
Noir] is something Im just tremendously excited about.
Obviously Shane dies very early in the comic.
When the show first started, I auditioned for Rick first.
He dies in the comic book.
But those things really arent important at the end of the day.
This is an unbelievable story to be a part of.
Frank started out in this story, and this was really Franks thing.
So it gave me a chance to map out an arc.
Man, it was really, really sad.
But I made him promise me he wouldnt do that.
Nobody said anything, everybody just silently walked together.
And that was that.
And I really didnt know what to do.
This was my show!
These are all my friends, my family.
I sound like the biggest weirdo in the world, but I didnt say goodbye.
I just wanted to watch and spectate.
But this will always be the greatest job I ever had.
