To some extent her story is about safety, explains the author.

Shes never going to get fired shes an Ivy League-educated white lady.

She is beat down, but shes safe, shes warm, shes fed, shes loved.

And a lot of the people around her arent.

It might feel jolting to discuss, at this point, hopefulness within the novel.

There is no moment where youre like okay, now Im allowed [happiness], she says.

Its just that every once in a while you get to sit inside of a moment thats good.

But I think theres hope in learning to sit inside of those moments.

We have wants and needs beyond the bare minimum.
